I went to CAMP 2017!

I recently got the opportunity to attend CAMP 2017 – a design, art and technology convention held annually in Calgary. This year was the fourth year and it was my first time attending. I am really looking forward to next year’s festival! Here’s why:

They had a ton of inspiring and motivational speakers. I felt so enlightened after coming out of each of the panels I attended. Panels I really enjoyed included: The Evolution of Our Relationship with Technology by Riccardo Giraldi, Stop Looking for Inspiration: Be Your Own Muse! by Lauren Hom, Remote: Hacking the World’s Genius by Robyn Larsen and Entertaining Design: It’s Nice to be Nice to the Nice by Emily Oberman. I made sure to take notes so that I can apply their ways of thinking and expert advice to my own creative adventures.

There was definitely a lot of opportunity to network with different individuals in the industry. Not only did people who work in the industry attend, but students did too! I didn’t really network with anyone because I am actually really shy… I noticed a lot of people did go to the conference with a friend, group or their co-workers, so I would love to try that next time. Talking might be a bit easier in a group!

The festival was for only two days (there was a third day with workshops, but that was a little bit more expensive to participate in) and I honestly wish it were a bit longer! It was reminiscent of going to lecture days at the university. I learned a lot and a few weeks later, I am still inspired.

I highly recommend the festival to anyone who’s looking for some motivation, inspiration and to learn new things about design trends and technology!

Outfit of the Day: Stars and Plaid

I went to the zoo the other day. It was 33 degrees Celsius… which is FREAKING hot!! I normally go for a cardigan or jacket to wrap around (I don’t like tans), but it was just too hot that day, so I opted for a simple t-shirt and a skirt… and a giant water bottle to keep me hydrated throughout the day, which also kept the sweat at bay.

T-Shirt: Simons – Skirt: Mariposa – Shoes: Payless Shoesource

The inner punk rocker in me screamed in excitement when I saw this gold star shirt at Simons for only $14.99 CDN. I was looking for a new graphic t-shirt, and was so happy to find this keeper! The red plaid skirt with black lace trimming has been in my wardrobe for quite some time now. It’s from a store called Mariposa, which I believe has closed down now. Can you guess how long I’ve had this skirt for? 13 years! When I was much shorter back then this skirt was probably closer to my knees… but now it’s pretty much a mini-skirt, but I still enjoy wearing it.

What do you like to wear when it’s really hot outside? Let me know in the comments! 🙂

Skincare + Makeup Haul

It’s been a while since I ordered through the online Sephora store. I’ve been wanting to re-establish my VIB status for months, but nothing really caught my eye and I didn’t feel like I needed to replenish my collection or try something new for a while. Lately I have been trying a whole lot of samples for skincare, such as different face moisturizers as my current one hasn’t really been helping with my dry patches around my nose area. One of the samples I tried was for the Origins GinZing SPF 40 Tinted Moisturizer. My sample lasted me a good week and a half, and after seeing a few reviews on it, I decided to purchase a tube of my own. A little amount goes a long way and it’s just the coverage that I need for weekday wear. It’s super quick to put on my face, smells great, wakes me up and is quite moisturizing! It’s also great for the summer and those sunny days with the SPF 40 included.

I got a deluxe sample of the OLEHENRIKSEN Face the Truth Gel Cleanser. I love the smell of this, it’s smells like oranges and is so refreshing. It foams up really quickly and I use it with my Sephora Silicon Pad. It helps remove leftover makeup that my coconut oil could not get rid of, and I am really enjoying it so far. The deluxe size has lasted me for a few weeks already. I think I will purchase this product once I run out!

I ran out of the soap that I got from work (lychee and orange soap! :D) and so I headed over to my favourite body/bath products store, Rocky Mountain Soap Company, and bought two bars of soap. The Floral Abyssinian soap bar smells like those candy rockets we would eat when we were children, and is quite refreshing to use in the bath. I also got the Geranium soap bar as geranium is one of my favourite scents (it’s in my deoderant!) and I also have dry skin… so hopefully it’ll help moisturize my skin.

I used Ebates to gain cashback on my Sephora purchase! I highly recommend it, buy a bit, get a bit back!

Outfit & Makeup of the Day – Dark & Coral + Blog Update!

If you stumbled upon this post, then you’ve made it to my brand new blog domain! I’ve been thinking about purchasing a domain and separate hosting for quite some time for my blog… and finally made that decision last week. Welcome to the new phixien.com! Surprisingly it was a breeze moving my old posts over from my old WordPress blog. The reason it took me so long was because I was shopping around and doing my research on the best hosting service. The items I really needed was a lifetime domain, fast/uncapped bandwidth and enough space to host my blog and any images/videos that I’d need to use on my blog. I read a ton of reviews and decided to go with FastComet. Which has been so good to me so far! 🙂

I quite enjoyed the layout from my previous blog so I decided to stick with that theme again. I’m going to be redoing the header here soon…. so excuse any pixelation that you might see for now.

With the new domain, I am hoping to blog a little more and share more of my recent finds, reviews and other posts with you all and am so excited! It will also give me the flexibility and much more control over what I post here (like my YouTube videos) so that I can continue to share everything I create for the blog and my channels. Thank you to all visitors, both old and new. I hope to provide some good posts for you to read!

Now onto the outfit & makeup of the day!

Coral Makeup Open Eyes

For date night, I usually like to glam up but because it was a night right after work, I was pretty exhausted and much too lazy to put on false lashes, so I kept my makeup very simple. (We were also going out for some smoked BBQ meat, so no need to glam up too much since it’ll be a mess with all the flavourful sauces!) I have been obsessed with coral coloured makeup lately, and so I went for this sultry look. 🙂

Coral Makeup Closed Eyes

Products used:

Hourglass Veil Primer
Guerlain Lingerie De Peau Fluide in 03N
Colourpop Eyeshadow in Wait for It
Sephora Colourful Wink-It Felt Liner in Little Black Dress
Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse
Tarte Tarteist™ PRO Glow to Go Highlight & Contour Palette

Since this look was a bit daring, I opted for my simple black dress from Forever 21. It slips right on so easily and goes well with this look. Easy and simple makeup/outfit for date night.

Road Trip Essentials

Hi! It’s been a while since my last post. I was on vacation in Kelowna and now I am back in town. During my road trip there, I thought I would write up a post about the items that I take with me and just some tips of what to bring…. so here it is, a week later!

I’m writing this post while on a road trip. As I sat here wondering why our dog doesn’t want to hang out with me, I realized that I could write a post of my essentials on a road trip! Thanks for the idea, Tofu!

The number one thing I think about if I’m going on a road trip is how I will entertain myself for hours. There’s a variety of things you can do, the easiest one is to socialize with your car mates. But if that’s not really an option (most people would probably fall asleep and not have to worry about entertaining themselves, lucky people!) then you have to find other fun things to do!

I’m typing this entry on my phone, so I bring that of course. I don’t have data throughout the province (please extend your range, Freedom!), so I’ll edit some photos through Snapseed and listen to music with headphones or earbuds so that I don’t distract anyone. If there’s any offline games I can play (not really) then I’ll play those too.

Of course I’ll probably run out of ideas and photos to edit, so another essential is my Nintendo 3DS. Consider bringing your favourite console and make sure it’s fully charged! I don’t play my 3DS as often, so I usually bring one game cartridge and play whatever trials or games I have installed on my SD card/device. This helps lessen the amount of stuff you need to bring. If you’re curious, I’m currently playing Pokemon Shuffle!

Bring a book! Or an ebook! I’ve brought my KOBO Glo ebook with me preloaded with some books. I prefer ebooks since I only need to bring one item and not multiple books that could take up a lot of space. Once I have access to Internet, I can always download some more books.

Sleeping is also another option. I envy people who can sleep almost the entire ride! I usually like staying awake so that I’m aware of my surroundings, but it is nice to sneak in a nap or two.

If you’re somewhat of a germaphobe like me, this will probably be a priority!

If you will not be stopping at places with washrooms and sinks with soap and paper towels, I recommend bringing some hand sanitizer (73% or more!), paper soap, a few bottles of water, wet wipes and towels. We usually use hand sanitizer and wet wipes after using the outhouse. But if you have paper soap or regular soap and some water bottles that you can use to wash your hands, it would be more effective!

I also bring some Lysol wipes with me to wipe down my phone and other devices, and anything else that isn’t my hands to disinfect. It’s great to have in the car!

Prepare some food!

Pack some food that won’t need a cooler and pack food that will actually keep you full throughout the ride. We usually get some Vietnamese subs and pack apples and bananas. And of course, pack water! I would not recommend freezing water bottles as they make take long to melt. If you want your water to be cool, just put some ice cubes inside a reusable water bottle instead of disposable one.

Girls Night Outfit – Florals

My first post on fashion! I am in no means an expert in fashion, and everyone’s styles are completely different, so do not quote me on anything. 🙂 My style changes from time to time, but I have been really into florals for a while… They are perfect for the summer and the super hot weather we have been getting here lately!

I haven’t been to a girls night out in a very long time, and so I was pretty stumped as to what to wear for a enjoyable evening with the girls. I turned to Pinterest first, and a lot of the results that popped up when I searched “summer girls night out outfits” were a little too much club-like, or full of items I didn’t really feel comfortable wearing out on their own, like spaghetti strap tops and tank tops. I’m afraid of bug bites!

So I dug through my closet and I’m sure some of you can relate what a strange feeling that can be. There will always be outfits you want to wear, but then you may find that they aren’t appropriate for the evening, or they may expose your skin too much to the sun/bugs… but once I stumbled upon my floral jumper that I hadn’t worn in ages, I was set for the night.

Here is me trying to ‘model’ for a decent photo… I should have taken more angles of the outfit, but it’s so simple!

Floral Romper from Forever 21

The back has a nice criss-cross pattern and ties up at the bottom of your back. It took a bit for me to get used to this dress, as I hadn’t worn an off-the-shoulder top or dress before, but I love the shoulder straps, it makes it so much easier to wear the top, especially if you are new to shoulder tops.

In case you’re curious, we ended up going to Trolley 5 for some food and drinks. Their mac and cheese entree with a fried egg is absolutely DEE-LICIOUS! I cannot recommend it enough, go try it if you are a fan of mac and cheese! We also went to Presotea, a new bubbletea place that opened on 17th ave. So many flavours!

What outfit do you have sitting in your closet that you had to give a second try, and why? Let me know in the comments below!

IPSY x Gudetama July 2017 Bag Opening

Gudetama has been a character that I’ve been an avid fan of since my Japan trip way back in 2015. I was traveling with friends and everywhere we went, the lazy egg would be scattered all over the place! Gudetama was just starting to get popular over here… then I saw Sanrio start promoting it more and now it looks like they’re doing so many collaborations!

I’ve also eyed IPSY bags but never really had the motivation to get one, until I saw Gudetama was doing a collab with Ipsy. I instantly subscribed for my first bag, and received it in the mail a few days ago.

In my metallic pink bubble-wrapped package I found:

A cute Gudetama makeup pouch (it was a bit smelly though…)Gudetama-makeup-pouch

Beaute Basics Travel Face Blender
Cougar Cosmetics Liquid Lipstick in Mulberry

Ciaté London Wonderwand Gel-Kohl Hybrid Liner in Black
OFRA Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Gold Rush

TONYMOLY I’m Real Sheet Masks – Green Tea & Lotus

I’m not too sure how I feel about this bag, especially it being my first. A friend of mine got completely different products (other than the liner and bag), and I wanted her products instead! I have too many blending sponges, liquid lipsticks and metallic eyeshadows… so half of this bag was not really for me. However, I’m looking forward to trying the TONYMOLY sheet masks!

Did you get the IPSY July 2017 Gudetama bag? Which products did you get and have you tried them? Let me know in the comments below!

Summer Essentials

Summer is finally here in Calgary! The sun here is fantastic, but there’s a few days where it just sends a beam straight to the surface of your skin. It’s important to always wear sunscreen with a good SPF and cover yourself as much as you can to protect your skin from the effects of the sun/UV rays and also if you don’t like tanning as much as me! Here’s some of the products I’ve been using for the summer so far:

Vanilla Coconut Sunscreen

Vanilla Coconut Sunscreen SPF 31 from Rocky Mountain Soap Company

Natural sunscreen has been my preference for quite a few years now, and I love this one. It’s non-whitening and smells delicious! The smell reminds me of birthday cake icing… (too bad I can’t eat it…) It doesn’t feel greasy when applied and it doesn’t feel heavy at all on my skin.

Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lip in Double Scoop – REVIEW

I had a desire to wear lip colours during the work week, and sometimes the loud, bright, and colourful lipsticks or liquid lipsticks that I had would be way too bold for the work day. I needed something that was muted, and still had colour to show my personality for the summer.

I randomly decided to check out the Colourpop website about a few weeks ago…

They had just released the Ultra Blotted Lips line. It was exactly what I wanted. It took me a couple of days to find some swatches to figure out which shades I wanted. Then they had a free international shipping with no minimum order available and I ended up going ahead with Double Scoop, since that was unlike any shade of lipstick I had!

Tarte Tarteist Pro Glow to Go – REVIEW

I’m really late hopping onto the highlighter train but after watching Nikkietutorials on YouTube and her collaboration with Kim Thai, I instantly fell in love with how well they applied their highlighter and how glowy and fabulous they looked with it on. I did think that highlighter was too excessive for me, especially since I have a very detailed face, so I did some research on how it can be worn with other makeup trends.

It was then time to find a highlighter of my own. I searched my eyeshadow/blush palettes to see if I had any built-in, but I didn’t, so I went through the aisles of Sephora and watched some reviews and found the Pro Glow to Go palette by Tarte Cosmetics.

It comes with three shades, Gleam (light bronze sheen), Burst (pearly), and Chisel which I haven’t used, but is an orange-brown contour shade.

Gleam’s pigmentation is sub-par, which is why I like it for everyday wear. Burst is very pigmented, though. I usually apply these highlighters with my fingers, on top of my cheek bones. For a while, I was also applying it on the bridge of my nose and the tip, which I learnt made me look too 3D-like, so I stopped!

I’m wearing Gleam here, which adds a nice glow to my cheeks and nose. It’s really nice!

Would you get the Pro Glow to Go palette? What’s your favourite highlighter?
